Eating Mindfully - Where Body & Soul Connect

Eating our food with awareness can indeed become Food For Soul.


Eating with full awareness is a soul satisfying experience this realization came to me very late in life .I remember as a young working mother in my 20’s and 30’s.and even later when children grew up and flew the nest me being a multi tasker carried on with the same unhealthy habit of having my parantha/sandwich/fruit/a glass of tea with one hand and nicely doing my chores ,or managing phone calls or my workshop mails with the other hand managing the ,lights to be switched on/off. Latches to be opened for the children or whoever was on the door, filling in the washing machine , taking the laundry off the stand,, or even while stirring vegetable pots , so me the absolute tea lover ended up having 15 to 20 cups of tea during the day and still ready for another cup. because I never had my tea or food with full awareness .out of 100 so many parts of my consciousness were busy doing everything else but be present in the moment .

ONE DAY AS I WAS PASSING these golden nuggets of being present in each moment to a client it suddenly dawned on me , OMG I don’t follow my own advice .

So starting that day I pledged to start by drinking at least the first cup of tea by being fully present with my tea n me .

Ah ! the shift happened – suddenly I was no longer rushed and stressed, and I was mindfully eating meals at proper times ,keeping the phone /laptop and everything away for that time.

Lo behold

I became aware of

Shape and size and colour

Touch feel the texture

Smell the scent

Bite and felt the crunchy or soft texture

Tasted the tangy salty, sour, bitter, mixed masala

The Saliva came out and mixed joyfully the with the food as I munched gratefully. You must experience this to believe .Try it and as you joyfully chew, feeling gratitude for all those who made this moment possible, immerse yourself fully in this experience till you feel satiated

food is eaten by 5 senses the

feast for the eyes

the lovely scent and aroma nose

the touch skin

the taste tongue

and fullness of a deliciously filled tummy results in a happy soul

become aware of the food ,each bite you eat

As they say in Naturopathy each bite has to be chewed 32 times till it mixes with saliva and finely grounded so that the stomach can easily digest it .By the way do you know? that the brain gets message that the stomach is full, and no longer hungry after about 15/20 minutes, by that time if we are gobbling and not chewing with full awareness we overeat unknowingly and the distention and indigestion happen .the result is no mystery to guess -- a distressed body and unhappy mind and a restless soul.

So I think I can’t stress enough on the importance of mindful eating the right food at right time ,in right quantities, in the right way so that you have a sound mind in a healthy body with a joyful soul

So become aware of the food, each bite you eat

Start with 5 minutes every day eating mindfully daily till it effortlessly becomes a healthy habit , let the food so lovingly earned, made and served become the food for your soul

bringing you peace n joy.
